Three Great Marketing Tactics for Small Business Budgets

Sometimes in small business it seems impossible to get ahead. It can often seem like we are competing with larger companies that have seemingly unlimited budgets, but what if I told you that in marketing, money ISN'T everything!? Let's dive into three of my favorite marketing tactics that work wonders for small business budgets.

Why Marketing Needs Creativity and Investment

In my journey through the marketing world, one principle has remained steadfast: marketing demands creativity but also requires investment. It's not enough to merely post on social media and hope for the best. Marketing needs to stand out and catch your audience's attention. It's about being creative and strategic.

But here's the kicker—your creative marketing efforts must be backed by an investment, whether it's in terms of money, time, or energy. As entrepreneurs, we often face constraints in these resources. However, if you aim for marketing success, you'll need to allocate at least two of these resources. Energy, in particular, is vital for executing your marketing strategy effectively.

Leveraging the Power of Word of Mouth

Many businesses claim that word of mouth is their primary source of clients, but they often fall short when it comes to generating genuine word-of-mouth referrals. Simply doing great work is no longer sufficient; you need to stand out in your industry. This means doing something that's worth talking about, something that your customers will share with their network.

For example, at Grow Disrupt, my company, we recently released a music video about the entrepreneurial journey. It was a unique approach to marketing our business and, lo and behold, everyone started talking about it. It created buzz around our brand and engaged our audience in a new and exciting way. That video has already prompted thousands of dollars in sales to our upcoming Grow Retreat.

An Outreach Campaign with a Twist

Setting up an outreach campaign can work wonders for your marketing strategy. Whether you employ social media, targeted mailers, emails, or good old-fashioned face-to-face networking, the key to success is offering value to your audience.

Create a valuable giveaway, flier, or handout. It should contain information that your target audience genuinely desires. In my network, I know someone who provides lists of native plants to those interested in landscaping. Not everyone needs this information, but it's incredibly valuable to those seeking more cost-effective landscaping solutions. Your outreach should be educational, informative, and leave a positive impression.

Getting Free Press and SEO Benefits

Getting featured in press publications is one of my all-time favorite marketing tactics. It might require an investment of time and effort, but it's worth it. The benefits are multi-faceted:

  • SEO Boost: Press features result in legitimate backlinks to your website, making search engines recognize your site as more valuable. This boosts your search engine ranking.
  • Social Proof: Being featured in reputable publications builds trust and credibility, which enhances your brand's reputation.
  • Increased Traffic: A well-placed feature can draw traffic to your website, effectively increasing your online presence.

Turn Limitations into Assets

Your small business budget constraints should be seen as assets rather than obstacles. They challenge you to think beyond the norm, encouraging you to get creative and make the most of your available resources. A smaller budget forces you to stretch, reach, and find innovative ways to make marketing magic happen.
